Why does a billionaire want to help your kid understand The Great Gatsby?
Dear David Siminhoff, I watched your interview and I totally agree with
Schmuff.com.. I noticed when I taught Early Childhood children in S.F.
many years ago, that the students were bored and so was I.
Teachers had these boring books that seemed dead.
The kids were dosing off.
High School and College can be expanded to internet
core courses for low income kids real college lectures online with four star
dynamic teachers highly trained in healing dynamics and problem solving
techniques.
The students need “multi” level healingand life skill training. Practical
skills like budgeting, life planning and goal setting. They need
teachers who can work with groups like one would do in AA .
I used to incorporate in my teaching day times when we would brainstorm problems
on the play yard etc. We brainstormed together ways to solve the student social
problems. Society created this by denying the
children beautiful schools, relevant education and jobs for the youth. It is our
shame. We did not follow up on Civil Rights and help these people
acculturate self esteem and a vision of a future. The children live in a latch key reality.
We need to
brainstorm a way to open up their hearts and support the community’s with
corporations working in their areas to supply jobs with good pay.
The community needs immersion skills to acculturate how to live a normal life
with health, family and well being. I wonder if a group of entrepreneurs could work
with one community on all levels. The project would have to effect every part
of their lives including what they look at daily on the streets in their neighborhoods.
Why are Oakland youth still killing each other?
This key to living healthy requires all of us to hold these kids up out of endless
cycles of poverty with total immersion into society.
How do we do it? By education, jobs, mentoring by successful men and woman as role
models. The children need literal reshaping of the structure of the whole community and
new housing, beautiful building and downtowns and real jobs with good pay..
the schools need to be technology connected and beautiful. They need to be hubs
with teen support and after school help to connect them and keep them safe.
I have always thought that in that Ghetto, there could
be a child who could change the world with his vision. I know that is true.
If we don’t do something soon, we will pay a dear price.

Hi! Loved this piece and love using Shmoop in my classroom. Just have to say that I get concerned when smart interviewers like yours make references of ageism. Many “old” teachers like me who have taught 30 years now are ALWAYS looking for the newest ways to keep students engaged and curious about learning. Thank you Shmoop for keeping me “young” in looking at literature in a deep and powerful way. ~Jeri Timmons-Tharp
Hello, I am Emma and i’m 15 years old and I live in France. I’m in a special bilingual section! For my English classes I use Shmoop to help me understand the books I am reading ! This site has really helped me through the years. Mostly because I probably don’t have all the keys to help me through my work. In my school we haven’t had classes to help us write essays ! This is why I thank Shmoop for helping me. I have learned to love literature and I want to continue into that path. Now my opinion on the question above is that David Siminoff is passionate about this subject and he wanted to transmit his knowledge to children like me who need a little more help to understand and appreciate literature. I think he put himself in the students position and asked himself what would help them through these several years of learning! and he found the way to interest us by writing amusing comments ! I think teachers should take example on his work, because the whole idea is to make us want to learn, make us more curious about things, and David Sininoff really does that !
So thank you ! And please continue !
